Chicago singer-songwriter Max Subar laid the foundation for »Anything Could Be«, his debut album, in a house on the shore of a frozen lake in Wisconsin. Subar returned to the sonic and spiritual landscape he had created during the first ten-day session, staying completely in the moment, working only when he could really fully engage with it. Most of the additional sessions that add texture and color to the album were recorded in Subar's home studio, the same house where Case Oats, the band led by Casey Gomez-Walker where Subar plays guitar, recorded their 2025 debut, »Last Missouri Exit«. His brother, Sam Subar, played drums. Other instrumentation comes from Case Oats bandmates Spencer Tweedy (drums on "I Never" and "Way Up"), Jason Ashworth (double bass) and Scott Daniel (violin) as well as frequent collaborators Chet Zenor (electric guitar), Kelly Hannemann (piano) and Sarah Weddle (vibraphone, organ and electric piano). The resulting arrangements are generous and enlightening, adding substance to the main features of the live guitar and vocal recordings of »Anything Could Be« without sacrificing their spontaneity. The result is a captivating, open-hearted debut that grows with the listener and rewards time and attentive listening. His 11 songs are imbued with what poet Adrienne Rich called "a wild patience," a radical silence that is itself a journey toward consciousness, peace, and self-awareness.
