Mike Oldfield, a proven sonic experimenter, uses only guitars (plucked, strummed, sampled, etc.) to create every sound on "Guitars." The more delicate, acoustic pieces "Summit Days," "Muse," and "Enigmatism" possess the meditative, elegant quality one has come to expect from Oldfield. However, the harder rock guitar ensembles lack Oldfield's usual sense of order and focus. "Four Winds," an unfinished jumble of distorted noises, completely misses its mark. Innovative and at times beautiful, "Guitars" is yet another intriguing experiment from one of modern music's most ambitious icons.
