"Graceland," released in 1986, was the seventh studio album by singer-songwriter Paul Simon. In 1984, following a period of depression, Simon became fascinated by a bootleg cassette of music from a South African township. He and Roy Halee planned a trip to Johannesburg, where he spent two weeks recording with South African musicians. The album thus features an eclectic mix of genres, including pop, rock, a cappella, zydeco, isicathamiya, and mbaqnaga. Inspired by these recordings, Simon composed new songs and collaborated with both African and American musicians. "Graceland" was a commercial success and became Simon's most successful studio album. In 1987, it won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year and sold over 16 million copies worldwide.
