Product description

»Horrorful Heights« marks an impressive new chapter in The Bevis Frond's extensive oeuvre and showcases the continued creativity of songwriter, guitarist and frontman Nick Saloman as he embarks on another decade as a musician. Long established as one of the most distinctive voices of British underground rock, Saloman continues to refine the band's qualities of melodic psychedelia, wiry guitar epics and songwriting artistry. One of the most accessible entrances to the Bevis Frond world, which combines all strengths into a cohesive, lively whole. The album moves fluidly between clanging psych-pop, heavy guitar riffs and pastoral reveries. The range of the album is large, but clearly defined. »Draining The Bad Blood« is reminiscent of the classic Bevis Fron style of melodically inspired guitar pop of the 60s, »Space Age Eyes«, a concise nine-minute odyssey, refers to the transcendental explorations of the electric Miles Davis of the 70s. The sitar-infused title track drifts through smoky psychedelia with polyphonic vocals and layered tablas - a loving echo of the headshop mystique Saloman has played with throughout the band's history. Elsewhere, »Mossback's Dream« combines lysergic leads with the driving energy of American hardcore of the 80s, creating a hybrid that is both timeless and completely distinctive. Other highlights include the Byrds-influenced »Buffaloed«, the swirling »Silver Insects« and »That's Your Lot«, a fast-paced firework of melancholic euphoria and one of the album's most immediate songs. Although eclectic, it is a focused portrait of The Bevis Frond in 2025 - vital, melodic and free of nostalgia. Saloman describes the collection quite simply: the best songs he has written in recent years were created without compulsion and quite instinctively. The result is a highlight from the late phase of one of the UK's quietest influential underground bands.
