Young London constable Clive Barnett begins his three-month training exchange in Denton. Here, in the provinces, time seems to move at a different pace. Barnett, however, has no time to settle in. Mrs. Uphill, a prostitute, reports her daughter missing. She usually picks Tracey up from children's church, but one of her clients is late. The little girl seems to have vanished without a trace. When Tracey doesn't return home overnight, a frantic search begins. Due to staff shortages at the police station, Barnett is assigned to the grumpy Detective Inspector Jack Frost to assist him in the Tracey case. Frost is considered a chaotic eccentric, but decorated with medals, he's practically unfireable. And the quirky Frost has his own unconventional investigative methods. Even the mother falls under suspicion. But things aren't always as they seem. Will the strange duo Frost-Barnett still be able to find little Tracey, or is it already too late?
