After various singles and the first EP, the Berlin Zecken finally present the first album between ska, punk, hip hop and reggae as a vinyl LP on Destiny Records! With »Blumen und Bengalos«, Udo Butter & the team present an album that combines clarity of content with musical complexity. The band deliberately works with contrasts: energetic offbeats and powerful brass sections meet melodic passages and accessible harmonies. Udo Butter & the team describe their approach as "fifth wave ska" – a contemporary continuation of the genre with a clear attitude, danceable energy and a conscious play with opposites. This hard-soft contrast characterises both the compositions and the lyrics and makes the production stylistically varied. The project was founded in 2021 in gentrified Berlin with the aim of taking a musical stance and critically dealing with social and economic exploitation logics. Initially, the line-up of Sublime served as an instrumental reference; however, the setup was supplemented by fixed keyboard and brass structures, inspired by Nina Hagen, among others. The result is a sound that combines classic ska elements with punk attitude, pop culture quotes, independent theatricality and awakens Seeed memories. In terms of content, the band clearly positions itself against right-wing ideologies and social exclusion. At the same time, the project sees itself not only as confrontational, but also as integrative: the lyrics combine provocation with a conciliatory tone and formulate the claim to open up collective perspectives.
